Ludoplex Québec An Entertainment Complex Designed with Sustainable Development in Mind
Québec City, December 6, 2007 – The province’s new entertainment destination — the Ludoplex Québec — has been designed, developed and built with the principles
of sustainable development fully respected,” affirmed Mr. Simon Brodeur, Loto-Québec’s Senior Vice-President of New Strategic
Initiatives, last week while addressing media representatives touring the new gaming centre. “As such, the Société des salons
de jeux du Québec (SSJQ) is seeking to obtain the Canada Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation with “Silver” certification for this building project.”
A Sustainable Approach
“While careful attention has been paid to the functional and aesthetic aspects as well as the layout of the new building in
order to reflect the dynamic nature of the gaming centre concept, the SSJQ has also fulfilled its commitment to offering its
clientele a secure environment and to designing and operating its Ludoplex with total respect for sustainable development
objectives,” added Mr. Brodeur.
An extensive series of criteria, technical and structural considerations, consumption methods and operational aspects are
among the requirements that must be met to obtain LEED accreditation. In that regard, following are some of the Québec City
gaming centre’s design, construction and operational characteristics in support of this certification:
- Recovery, reuse and recycling of dry materials (steel, aluminum, concrete, wood, metal, etc.) on the construction site - Recovery of excavation materials (mixing of earth with that recovered in Trois-Rivières); sifting and enrichment of these
materials in order to produce earth blends suitable for planting projects - Treatment and infiltration system for runoff water, which replenishes ground water and minimizes seepage into the city’s
rainwater network; this is the second such application in Québec, the first being used at the Ludoplex Trois-Rivières - Waterless urinals - Containment and use of heat in the glass tower and on the surface of exterior brickwork - Facing of the exterior surface in a pale colour (with a reflectance level above 0.3) on all pedestrian and vehicular surfaces
in order to reduce heat pockets - Facing of tiles in certain traffic areas made of recycled tire rubber - Exterior lighting minimizing nocturnal light pollution - Green and high-reflectance roofs - Low water consumption landscaping not requiring the use of an irrigation system - Use of materials with low emissions of volatile organic components (paint, coatings, composite wood, adhesives for laminates) - Parking lot foundation containing a quantity of roller-compacted concrete and stone - Parking for bicycles and spaces reserved for carpoolers
According to Mr. Brodeur, all of these attributes serve to demonstrate the Corporation’s dedication to sustainable development
A New Business Model
Mr. Brodeur, who is also in charge of the SSJQ, emphasized the two key elements fuelling the gaming centre concept — control
and entertainment. “Our objective was to create an innovative entertainment complex while promoting responsible gaming.” In
so doing, numerous control and awareness measures have been put into place at the Ludoplex Québec for the benefit of its patrons.
A subsidiary of Loto-Québec created in 2005, the Société des salons de jeux du Québec's mission is to offer electronic-type
games of chance (VLTs) to an adult clientele, while developing and effectively and responsibly managing controlled sites in
which entertainment constitutes an integral part of the customer experience.
