An explosion of colours in downtown Montréal!
Le monde habité de Claude Le Sauteur moves in to Espace Création Loto-Québec for the summer
Montréal, June 18, 2008 – Espace Création Loto-Québec is thrilled to welcome Le monde habité de Claude Le Sauteur, an important exhibit of the works of one of the icons of Québec’s contemporary art scene. Presented last year at La Malbaie’s
Musée de Charlevoix, this free of charge exhibition comes to Espace Création Loto‑Québec for the summer and looks forward
to welcoming visitors throughout the season.
Born on Québec’s North Shore in 1926, Claude Le Sauteur enrolled at the l’École des beaux‑arts de Québec in 1945. His art
owes much to the heritage of his three masters, Jean Paul Lemieux, Jean-Philippe Dallaire and Omer Parent. In addition to
painting, Mr. Le Sauteur devoted many years of his life to graphics and design.
Musée de Charlevoix curator Brigitte Lacroix (who is also Commissioner of this exhibition) selected works from collections
throughout the land that illustrate the painter’s Charlevoix period. Claude Le Sauteur spent the last 30 years of his life
in this region at Les Éboulements, where he died at age 81.
Thanks to more than 70 objects–including nearly 20 artefacts from the artist’s personal collection–and many large‑format works
in striking colours, the viewing public can discover the creations of this exceptional, prominent Québec artist. Never‑before
shown objects plus photographs, stained glass, a gigantic sculpture inspired by one of the artist’s own paintings and … a
collector’s automobile are all part of the exhibit. Claude Le Sauteur took up the daring and ambitious challenge laid down
by a friend, who offered his 1975 Porsche 911S as canvas for a work of art. And what a jewel it is! Two series of paintings
are also featured. The first represents six Québec historical or legendary figures. The second, L’Univers du rire, is composed of 12 paintings created exclusively for the Just for Laughs Festival at the request of Gilbert Rozon. The Festival
takes place this year from July 10 to July 20. For the occasion, the public is invited to participate free of charge at either
of the two weekends-full of rollicking terrace activities on July 12, 13, 19 and 20 at the Loto‑Québec head office, 500 Sherbrooke Street West.
The works of Claude Le Sauteur all interpret a plastic modernity constructed with great rigour and from which emerge an enormous
sensitivity and pictorial awareness. This fascinating and larger‑than‑life universe awaits at Le monde habité de Claude Le Sauteur, a free of charge exhibition that art lovers can see as often as they wish between June 18 and September 21 at Espace Création
Loto‑Québec. It’s a marvellous way to colour your summer! Swimmer Sylvie Bernier, who is a close friend of the late artist’s
family, has with great pleasure agreed be spokesperson for the event.
Espace Création supports all forms of the visual arts
Loto-Québec’s commitment to fine art began in 1979, but the collection really took shape starting in 1985 with the inauguration
of a well‑structured acquisitions program. As owner of one of the largest corporate collections in Canada, Loto‑Québec holds
approximately 4,000 works by close to 1,000 Québec artists. Opened in downtown Montreal in 2005, Espace Création Loto‑Québec is a one-of-a-kind multidisciplinary site for exhibits, dissemination and activities that is accessible to the
public, free of charge. Espace Création is a also a unique venue for budding creators as well as established Québec artists
such as Gilles Carle, Frédéric Back, François Vincent, Pierre Gauvreau… Why wait, come discover this cultural oasis in the
heart of the Sherbrooke Street hubbub.
